On Asphalte Roadways

Description

This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide.

Sequel to Mercedes Lackey's "Closer to Home," this adventure continues Mags's journey as Valdemar's herald spy. Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza draws upon his lifelong work in archaeology, anthropology, genetics, molecular biology, and linguistics, to address the basic questions of human origins and diversity. Coauthored by his son, Francesco, the book answers age-old questions such as: Was there a mitochondrial Eve? Did the first humans originate in Africa or in several Speaking of Apraxia : A Parents' Guide to Childhood Apraxia of Speech free download pdf spots on the planet at about the same time? How did humans get onto North America, the tip of South America, and Australia? The Navy has the Navy Seals and the Army has the Green Berets. Men forged in battle, the Green Berets immerse themselves in hostile territory, sleeping next to their enemies to study the people who want to kill them. In this behind-the-scenes memoir, acclaimed as "riveting" and an "eye-opening, unconventional war story" (Kirkus Reviews), Green Beret and retired lieutenant colonel Tony Schwalm takes you deep inside the legendary training camp that turns men into warriors. The Special Forces Qualification Course, a.k.a. Q Course, is infamous as the training pipeline through which conventional soldiers are transformed, with blood, sweat, and tears, into unconventional guerrillas. Tony Schwalm knows that pipeline from end to end. As a student, he went through it to earn his green beret. As a commander of Special Forces, he operated the pipeline at Fort Bragg, pushing soldiers through brutal tests of physical strength and stamina.

Speaking of Apraxia : A Parents' Guide to Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Description

At last, a parents' guide to understanding, treating, and living with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Written in an empathic style by a parent who has been there, this book offers hope and practical advice for parents of toddlers to teens with this neurologically-based motor speech disorder. Characterised by difficulties with planning and producing the complex set of movements necessary for intelligible speech, CAS can be a child's only diagnosis or can be accompanied by other special needs such as learning disabilities, Down syndrome, or autism. Parents and professionals will appreciate the author's clear explanations of everything from diagnosing CAS and working with speech-language pathologists (SLPs), to understanding how to distinguish it from other speech disorders, and getting appropriate early intervention and special education support. Drawing on the latest research, professionals' insights and her own and other parents' experience, the author covers these important topics: I: The Straight Scoop on Speech Basics -- CAS definition; An Overview of Speech & Language; Where to Get Help and What to Ask; Your First Appointment with an SLP. II: Now What?!-- Getting, Coping with, and Understanding the Diagnosis; Health & Genetics; All about Speech Therapy. III: Helping Your Child -- Complementary and Alternative Medical and Treatment Approaches (Diet, Music, Movement Therapy, and More). IV: Off to School -- Getting Ready; Special Education Ins & Outs; Phonological Awareness; Reading Issues. V: Coping & Hoping -- Dealing with Emotions and Family Life; What the Future May Hold; Networking, Support Groups, and Advocacy. Appendices: Information on insurance, summer camps and enrichment programs, speech language milestones, and a glossary of terms. This is a comprehensive and authoritative resource any family, SLP, occupational therapist, or paediatric practice will be glad to own or recommend.

face2face Pre-intermediate Workbook with Key

Description

The Workbook offers additional practise for students of face2face Starter, with self-study exercises which practise all the language taught in the Student's Book - including exercises on pronunciation and spelling. It also features a Reading and Writing Portfolio linked to the CEF, which contains ten extra double-page lessons to be used either for self-study or in class. The Workbook also features a removable Answer Key, which can simply be pulled free of the books binding.

Mason draws on a century of Rimbaud scholarship to choreograph a superbly clear-eyed presentation of the poet s works. He arranges Rimbaud s writing chronologically, based on the latest manuscript evidence, so readers can experience the famously teenaged poet s rapid evolution, from the lyricism of "Sensation" to the groundbreaking early modernism of "A Season in Hell." Alanna, disguised as a boy, becomes a squire to none other than the heir to the throne. Prince Jonathan is not only Alanna s liege lord, he is also her best friend and one of the few who knows the secret of her true identity. But when a vicious sorcerer threatens the prince s life, it will take all of Alanna s skill, strength, and magical power to protect him, even at the risk of surrendering her dreams " What is intelligence-led policing? Who came up with the idea? Where did it come from? How does it relate to other policing paradigms? What distinguishes an intelligence-led approach to crime reduction? How is it designed to have an impact on crime? Does it prevent crime? face2face Pre-intermediate Workbook with Key pdf These are just a few of the questions that this book seeks to answer. This revised and updated second edition includes new case studies and viewpoints, a revised crime funnel based on new data, and a new chapter examining the expanding role of technology and big data in intelligence-led policing. Most importantly, the author builds upon an updated definition of intelligence-led policing as it has evolved into a framework capable of encompassing more operational police activity than simply organized crime and recidivist offenders.

The Body Bears the Burden : Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease

Description

New edition provides updated concepts and ideas in simplified medical language The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, Second Edition is the update of the classic book that explains the reasons behind some of the most common symptoms and conditions that previously defied a medical explanation. Respected author, Robert C. Scaer, MD, has diligently simplified the complex medical language that was used in the first edition to make it easier for lay readers and patients to understand all without sacrificing accuracy. This valuable text presents a new theory of the neurophysiology of traumatic stress and dissociation and includes several updated chapters and new concepts that have been developed since the previous edition. Human response is quite different than other animals' response to trauma. This response is discussed in detail in The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, Second Edition, including the fight/flight/freeze cycle and how the human response causes abnormal regulation of many body systems which then may lead to many illnesses or conditions. The emotional and physical experiences of patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and other syndromes such as whiplash are comprehensively examined. Patients and lay readers alike who have been told it is all in your head may well feel like this book was specifically written about them and the unexplained complex symptoms they experience. Topics in The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, Second Edition include: the role of the fight/flight/freeze response in traumatic stress the neurophysiology of traumatic stress and dissociation the Whiplash Syndrome as a model for procedural memory in trauma analysis of traumatic repetition the theoretical concept of somatic dissociation the varied syndromes and medical diseases of trauma and dissociation a theoretical analysis or therapy for trauma illustrative case histories of trauma and the body and more! The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, Second Edition is valuable information for physicians, psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, nurses, and those lay people looking to better understand the physiologic rationale for a large number of perplexing chronic medical diseases and syndromes.

Rosemary Horrox,Simon MacLean,Professor Graham A. Loud: Roger II and the Creation of the Kingdom of Sicily

Roger II and the Creation of the Kingdom of Sicily

Description

This student-friendly volume brings together English translations of the main narrative sources, and a small number of other relevant documents, for the reign of Roger II, the founder of the kingdom of Sicily. The kingdom created by King Roger was the most centralised and administratively advanced of the time, but its genesis was fraught with difficulty as the king sought to extend his power from the island of Sicily and Calabria into other parts of the south Italian mainland. This struggle, that lasted from 1127 until 1140, is graphically revealed by the two main texts in this book. A number of other texts illuminate key aspects of the reign: the relationship with the papacy, the German invasion of 1137 that came close to toppling the king's rule, the expansion of Sicilian power into the Abruzzi in 1140, and the law and administration of the kingdom, often seen as a model for the growth of effective government in the twelfth century. Despite the great intrinsic interest of the reign of King Roger, these texts have never appeared in English translation before. This will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars of medieval Europe. -- .

Mckenzie Funk: Windfall: The Booming Business of Global Warming

Windfall: The Booming Business of Global Warming

Description

A fascinating investigation into how people around the globe are cashing in on a warming world McKenzie Funk has spent the last six years reporting around the world on how we are preparing for a warmer planet. Funk shows us that the best way to understand the catastrophe of global warming is to see it through the eyes of those who see it most clearly--as a market opportunity. Global warming's physical impacts can be separated into three broad categories: melt, drought, and deluge. Funk travels to two dozen countries to profile entrepreneurial people who see in each of these forces a potential windfall. The melt is a boon for newly arable, mineral-rich regions of the Arctic, such as Greenland--and for the surprising kings of the manmade snow trade, the Israelis. The process of desalination, vital to Israel's survival, can produce a snowlike by-product that alpine countries use to prolong their ski season. Drought creates opportunities for private firefighters working for insurance companies in California as well as for fund managers backing south Sudanese warlords who control local farmland. As droughts raise food prices globally, there is no more precious asset. The deluge--the rising seas, surging rivers, and superstorms that will threaten island nations and coastal cities--has been our most distant concern, but after Hurricane Sandy and failure after failure to cut global carbon emissions, it is not so distant. For Dutch architects designing floating cities and American scientists patenting hurricane defenses, the race is on. For low-lying countries like Bangladesh, the coming deluge presents an existential threat. Funk visits the front lines of the melt, the drought, and the deluge to make a human accounting of the booming business of global warming. By letting climate change continue unchecked, we are choosing to adapt to a warming world. Containing the resulting surge will be big business; some will benefit, but much of the planet will suffer. McKenzie Funk has investigated both sides, and what he has found will shock us all. To understand how the world is preparing to warm, "Windfall" follows the money.

Seamus Heaney,John D. Niles: Beowulf

Beowulf

Description

Composed toward the end of the first millennium, Beowulf ?is the elegiac narrative of the Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel's mother. Drawn to what he has called the "four-squareness of the utterance" in ?Beowulf ?and its immense emotional credibility Seamus Heaney gives the great epic convincing reality But how to visualize the poet's story has always been a challenge for modern-day readers. In Beowulf: An Illustrated Edition, John D. Niles, a specialist in Old English literature, provides visual counterparts to Heaney's remarkable translation. More than one hundred full-page illustrations-Viking warships, chain mail, lyres, spearheads, even a reconstruction of the Great Hall-make visible Beowulf's world and the elemental themes of his story: death, divine power, horror, heroism, disgrace, devotion, and fame. This mysterious world is now transformed into one of material splendor as readers view its elegant goblets, dragon images, and finely crafted gold jewelry against the backdrop of the Danish landscape of its origins.

From the real life Shirley Valentine, Anne Zouroudi's seventh Greek mystery with the popular detective, Hermes Diaktoros. The olive harvest is drawing to a Beowulf free ebook close in the town of Dendra, and when Hermes Diaktoros arrives for the celebratory festival he expects an indulgent day of food and wine. But as young men leap a blazing bonfire in feats of daring, one of them is badly burned. Did he fall, or was he pushed? Then, as Hermes learns of a deep-running feud between two families, one of their patriarchs dies. Determined to find out why, Hermes follows a bitter trail through the olive groves to reveal a motive for murder, and uncovers a dark deed brought to light by the sin of gluttony. Nevertheless, the push from China’s senior leadership to implement economic reforms did not go unchallenged, nor has the Chinese government been eager to publicize its engagement with Western-style innovations. Even today, Chinese Communists decry dangerous Western influences and officially maintain that China’s economic reinvention was the Party’s achievement alone. Unlikely Partners sets forth the truer story, which has continuing relevance for China’s complex and far-reaching relationship with the West.

The Path: A New Way to Think About Everything

Description

INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER SUNDAY TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER Harvard's most popular professor explains how thinkers from Confucius to Zhuangzi can transform our lives The first book of its kind, The Path draws on the work of the great but largely unknown Chinese philosophers to offer a profound guide to living well. By explaining what these teachings reveal about subjects from decision-making to relationships, it challenges some of our deepest held assumptions, forcing us to "unlearn" many ideas that inform modern society. The way we think we're living our lives isn't the way we live them. The authors show that we live well not by "finding" ourselves and slavishly following a grand plan, as so much of Western thought would have us believe, but rather through a path of self-cultivation and engagement with the world. Believing in a "true self" only restricts what we can become - and tiny changes, from how we think about careers to how we talk with our family, can start to have powerful effects that will open up constellations of new possibilities. Professor Michael Puett's course in Chinese philosophy has taken Harvard by storm. In The Path, he collaborates with journalist and author Christine Gross-Loh to make this timeless wisdom accessible to everyone for the very first time.

Paul Zanker: Roman Art

Roman Art

Description

Presented in very clear and accessible language, "Roman Art" offers new and fascinating insights into the evolution of the forms and meanings of Roman art. Traditional studies of Roman art have sought to identify an indigenous style distinct from Greek art and in the process have neglected the large body of Roman work that creatively recycled Greek artworks. In this fresh assessment the author offers instead a cultural history of the functions of the visual arts, the messages that these images carried, and the values that they affirmed in late Republican Rome and the Empire. The analysis begins at the point at which the characteristic features of Roman art started to emerge, when the Romans were exposed to Hellenistic culture through their conquest of Greek lands in the third century BCE. As a result, the values and social and political structure of Roman society changed, as did the functions and characters of the images it generated.

Green Island: A Novel

Description

“Shawna Yang Ryan’s propulsive storytelling carries us through a bloody time in Taiwanese history, its implications still reverberating today. The story is haunted by questions about whether Taiwan is a part of China or its own country, what the costs are of standing up for one’s beliefs and by the choices made by one father and his daughter. Green Island is a tough, unsentimental and moving novel that is a memorial not only to the heroes, but also to the survivors.” —Viet Thanh Nguyen, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer A stunning story of love, betrayal, and family, set against the backdrop of a changing Taiwan over the course of the twentieth century. February 28, 1947: Trapped inside the family home amid an uprising that has rocked Taipei, Dr. Tsai delivers his youngest daughter, the unnamed narrator of Green Island, just after midnight as the city is plunged into martial law. In the following weeks, as the Chinese Nationalists act to crush the opposition, Dr. Tsai becomes one of the many thousands of people dragged away from their families and thrown into prison. His return, after more than a decade, is marked by alienation from his loved ones and paranoia among his community—conflicts that loom over the growing bond he forms with his youngest daughter. Years later, this troubled past follows her to the United States, where, as a mother and a wife, she too is forced to decide between what is right and what might save her family—the same choice she witnessed her father make many years before.   As the novel sweeps across six decades and two continents, the life of the narrator shadows the course of Taiwan’s history from the end of Japanese colonial rule to the decades under martial law and, finally, to Taiwan’s transformation into a democracy. But, above all, Green Island is a lush and lyrical story of a family and a nation grappling with the nuances of complicity and survival, raising the question: how far would you be willing to go for the ones you love? From the Hardcover edition.
